For Free Art this past year I decided to push myself. For those unfamiliar with Free Art it is a project I’ve participated in for the past 6 or 7 years. Right after Thanksgiving a group of local artists create 30 pieces of art each. We divide the art into boxes that are placed around Newburyport, Portsmouth, and other local towns. People are free to take whatever they like. I like to create 30 unique pieces of art (you are allowed to make copies.) I feel like it’s a great opportunity to explore a series or pick up a new technique. I’ve been wanted to work with gouache so I thought this would be a great time to try it out. I found an old yearbook and decided to create portraits from the yearbook. The photos were all in black and white. It’s hard to tell from the scan, but I used metallic paints on the borders. The finished pieces were approx: 3×5″. I wasn’t particularly happy with the individual outcome, I think they look better as a grid.
